Mercedes-Benz's full-width Super Screen is available as an option, giving front-seat passengers their own infotainment interface with access to games, streaming services and a variety of built-in settings.

Mercedes-Benz has introduced a new lighting trim in gray open-pore ash wood with AMG logo as standard. Relevant driving information and car functions can be viewed on the 12.3-inch MBUX super screen. The driver and front passenger will sit on electrically adjustable AMG sports seats with MB-Tex/microfiber upholstery with AMG-specific graphics and contrasting red stitching. Customers can also opt for power-adjustable Nappa leather AMG Performance seats, while a Nappa leather AMG Performance steering wheel with AMG

Drive Unit steering buttons is standard.

The new Mercedes-AMG E 53 is instantly recognizable. First up is the radiator grille with vertical slats, with lighting as standard. The model also features wider front fenders (0.43 inches wider on each side compared to the standard E-Class), making room for a wider track on the front axle. Redesigned exterior air intakes appear at the front, each with two horizontal slats and a central A-wing, with air exiting through openings in the wheel arches.

Mercedes has installed hybrid-specific badges on the front fenders and rear to complement the smooth silhouette. The hybrid model comes with 20-inch AMG alloy wheels as standard or 21-inch forged wheels available at extra cost. Stopping power is provided by internally ventilated brake discs with four-piston fixed calipers on the front axle and discs with single-piston floating calipers on the rear axle. There are quad tailpipes at the rear, a new spoiler on the trunk lid, and a red E53 badge indicating that the engine is a hybrid.

A new 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine replaces the previous twin-turbo V8 and is paired with a powerful electric motor mounted within the gearbox housing. The inline-six engine produces 443 horsepower, 14 more than its predecessor. The upgrade is largely due to a new twin-scroll exhaust turbocharger with higher boost pressure (from 16 psi to 21.8 psi), as well as changes to the software.

The new Mercedes-AMG E 53 is available in sedan and wagon body styles. The E 53 will also be easier to charge than most plug-ins, with optional 60kW DC fast charging taking the battery state of charge from 10% to 80% in just 20 minutes. Even if a DC charger is not specified, the on-board AC charger operates up to 11 kW.

Hybrid-specific driving modes are also available in the new Mercedes-AMG E 53, which is equipped with the new AMG Ride Control steel spring suspension with adaptive damping. The driver can select one of three available damping modes: Comfort, Sport and Sport+. Active rear-axle steering is standard on the new Mercedes-Benz AMG E 53 and aids maneuvering in tight spaces.

The E53 features a new radiator grille with AMG's familiar vertical stripes and lighting surround, a deeper front bumper and widened front fenders. Unfortunately, the rear edge of the fender also has what looks like a vent, but closer inspection reveals it to be blank. The mesh for the smaller fake vents on the rear bumper is also contoured rather than real.

The gearshift paddles behind the steering wheel now have a dual function. In the more powerful Dynamic mode, they do offer the driver a choice of gear ratio changes, but when running on electric power, they alter the level of regenerative braking. AMG says the most radical of these will be single-pedal mode.

The new Mercedes-AMG E 53 accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, while the slightly heavier Touring version takes 3.9 seconds. Both are electronically capped at 250 km/h, but the optional AMG Driver's Package relaxes the speed limiter to 280 km/h for the sedan and 275 km/h for the estate. When running on electric power alone, the new E53 model has a top speed of 140 km/h.

The new Mercedes-Benz AMG E 53 and station wagon will be launched in North America and Europe before the end of 2024, and the price has not yet been announced. Reference North American pricing for the 2022 model starts at $82,450. In Europe, the new AMG E53 is only slightly more expensive than the old version.
